The Cheyenne River Lakota Reservation is located in north central South Dakota and spans 4,267 square miles (roughly the size of the state of Connecticut) making it the 4th largest reservation in the United States. It is a part of the Great Sioux Nation that was split apart by the United States in 1889. The recorded population as of the 2010 census is a little over 8,000 residents with approximately 75% being American Indian.
